Otoplasty

Ear Pinning (Otoplasty)

Ears can be shaped irregularly or larger or smaller than we would like. A procedure to reshape the ears or bring them close to the scalp is termed ear pinning or otoplasty. This is usually a cosmetic procedure but if a graft needs to be taken for a functional nasal surgery then the result might look the same. Ear pinning provides a more natural and less obvious ear. Children will usually have this procedure done at ages 6 to 8 due to classmate teasing but patients of any age may be bothered by their ears and many will even style their hair to cover the ears.

What are the types of otoplasty?

The types of otoplasty include ear augmentation which enlarges ears for patients with smaller ears that have not developed to adult size. Ear reduction where the ears are larger than normal and the earlobe may be reduced or the ear cartilage made smaller. Ear reshaping which may include sutures or cartilage modifications to make the outer ear look more natural. And, ear pinning where the ear sticks out and surgery brings the ear back towards the head.

What happens at my initial office visit?

You will have the time to tell Dr. Harounian what you would like to change with your ears. He then performs a detailed history and ear. He evaluates the position of your ears, takes photos he reviews with you, and then recommends a procedure that you are comfortable with. He will discuss what needs to be done to make sure your ears are symmetric

What happens during otoplasty?

You may have your procedure in the office or in the operating room. The surgery is performed with local or general anesthetic. Patients under 14 usually do better with general anesthesia. During the surgery the area of ear operation is anesthetized and an incision is made behind the ear to expose cartilage. Surgeons usually recommend a general anesthetic for children. Most often the ear is reshaped with sutures or conservative cartilage removal. The incision is hidden behind the ear and a dressing is placed on the ear.

How is otoplasty recovery?

With Dr. Harounian’s advanced surgical techniques, patients experience a more rapid and comfortable recovery period. He performs state to the art otoplasty. The dressings on your ears are removed in a few days. You will sleep on your back and use a headband at night after that for 2 weeks to make sure the ear is not accidentally pulled forward. Most ears look more natural as soon as the dressing is removed. If you have any concerns it is important for you to call the doctor. Discomfort from ear pinning is minimal although there can be some itching as healing progresses. The ears are fully healed at 4 to 6 weeks and you should avoid physical activity where they may be injured before that.

What are the benefits of otoplasty?

Children tend to obtain more self-confidence and can have a decrease in bullying and teasing. The ears appear more natural and symmetric which can translate into less self-consciousness for the patient. The risks of otoplasty are minimal and the results permanent.

Does insurance pay for ear pinning?

Insurances historically have paid for younger children’s otoplasty but not for teenagers or adults. Our staff will determine your benefits and let you know what they are so there are no surprises.
